Genetical Study of Male Sterility in Carrots , Daucus carota L.


Abstract
This experiment was carried out to breed maintainer lines of male sterility essential to F©û hybrid breeding in carrots. Male sterile materials used were brown anther type from Shin Kurota I and New King Chantenay, and petaloid type from Spartan Bonus. Segregation ratios of male sterile and fertile plants in populations of F©û¢¥s, backcrosses and selfed recurrent parents were used for the genetical analysis of male sterility. As a result several maintainer lines for male sterility of Shin Kurota I and Spartan Bonus, respectively, were bred. However, no suitable maintainer could be found for the male sterile source from the variety New King Chantenay.
